Conversation Silhouette of Grandmother and Granddaughter
  • Here, Grandma wears enormous gigot sleeves and a dress with a natural waist. Her skirt includes a flounce and she wears a pelisse to cover her neck and décolleté. Her bonnet is quite extravagant, with a frill at the front and lots of bows and ribbons. If you look closely, you can see a ringlet hanging on the side of her face. Grandma has something in her hand but I can’t tell what it is. Her shoes tie as do the little girl with her. I feel comfortable naming the gender of this girl because she is a bit older than the child in the other profile and she wears a big bow in the back of her dress. Notice that she wears a string of beads—likely coral beads which were worn to ward off evil spirits (we call it “good luck” these days). The cut figures are a dark grey paper with highlighting in black and gold paint. This beautiful conversation silhouette resides in a likely original, period walnut veneer frame measuring 11 3/4" x 14 1/4" with a sight size of 7 3/4" x 10 1/4". Circa 1825, possibly by the Hubard Gallery. We are offering Mom and the baby in a separate listing.
