Antique Textile Pieced and Beaded Star Pillow, Probably Pincushion
  • I’ve recently acquired a number of pieces from a long-time a private collection of make do and needlepoint pincushions. It is a fabulous collection that I’m pleased to offer these wonderful pieces. Ms. Hardy enjoyed these pieces for 30 years and you can see that she has an eye for the best!

This is definitely my favorite of the pincushion pillows! I love the colorful contrast of the pieced diamonds of wool and the beads and the whimsy of the starburst shape. The pillow appears to be completely hand-sewn. There is a bit of wear showing to some pieces of wool (including the red wool on the back) but no holes. Some missing beadwork but nothing distracting. I’ve given you lots of close up photos so please look closely. The pillow has a hard stuffing (probably sawdust). It measures 9” at the widest points and is about 3 ½” thick. My best date estimate is late 19th century.
