Antique Textile Cross-Stitch Pillow, Probably Pincushion
  • I’ve recently acquired a number of pieces from a long-time a private collection of make do and needlepoint pincushions. It is a fabulous collection that I’m pleased to offer these wonderful pieces. Ms. Hardy enjoyed these pieces for 30 years and you can see that she has an eye for the best!

I absolutely love to see the Bargello design in needlework and so, naturally, I love this pincushion or pillow done in a 19th century version of the design. Beautiful muted colors of reds, pinks, oranges, blues, greens and white, this pillow will look stunning in your sewing collection or a stand-alone textile piece. Sewn in wool thread on loosely woven canvas backing, there are very few instances of thread loss (see the close up photos). There is an insignificant bit of damage to the twisted wool thread cording that edges the pillow. The wool ball tassels are stunning and the back of the pillow is a rose-color damask. 7” square, not counting those glorious tassels. Stuffed with something soft, like cotton. Conservative age estimate is circa 1880.
