Antique Folk Art Carved Whimsey Chain with Hand & Ball in Box
  • After listing the Heart-in-Hand painting a few days ago, I thought I’d make today a “handy” update! I love these whimsey puzzle chains and this one especially because of the hand carved as part of it. These puzzle chains are carved from one piece of wood—the puzzle, of course, is how did they do that? This one is about 18” long. The chain ends with a ball & disc in a box, held to the chain with a hand…..all the same piece of wood. The width of the ball in cage is 1 3/8". That is measuring the diagonal of the square cage. The length from the bottom of the cage (including the disc in cage at the very bottom) to the top of the link that the hand is holding is 6 1/2". Wonderful condition. It dates between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century.
