American School Portrait of Golden-Haired Child with Ringlets
  • This indoor/outdoor portrait scenery is a fantasy formula that quite a few portraitists used in the 18th & 19th centuries. This beautiful girl resides in a gorgeous period gilt frame. She gazes at the viewer with the darkest brown eyes I’ve seen on a blond. She wears a peach-colored dress with an unfitted bodice that gathered at the waist and topped a full tiered skirt that was likely supported by crinoline. Her ruffled cap sleeves are edged with white lace. She wears white lacy underpants that show beneath dress, white stockings, black Mary Jane shoes. She holds a somewhat tattered book. She is depicted in one of those indoor-outdoor scenes in which she stands before what appears to be an interior wall and on a floor of geometrically placed marble tiles. At the edge of this “room” is a lattice-covered square column covered with blooming pink roses. At the top of our view of the column is a bird cage housing a song bird. However, it appears that an outside bird is perched at the front of the cage, visiting with its captured friend. Beyond the column is an exterior scene that includes a garden leading to woodlands and, farther still, mountains and a body of water.

Framed in a stunning period gilt frame measuring 35-1/4" x 30-1/4." The painting has been professionally lined and conserved. Circa 2nd quarter of the 19th century.
